I needed a plumber right away to shut off the water and fix a broken pipe that was about to flood our basement. Lesson learned: know where your water shut-off valve is located; ours is hidden behind shelves in the basement. I ended up calling Fairfax Water and asking them to send someone out to shut off the water from the outside, which they quickly did. Our neighbor gave me a card for Plumbing Doctors and said they had responded quickly when she had a plumbing emergency. The Doctor arrived about an hour later, as promised. Over the course of several hours — some of it billable and some spent waiting for people or parts — he introduced me the interior shut-off valve; figured out where the water was coming from and why (something to do with a legacy lawn-sprinkler system; and then brought over a wet vac to clean up the water. Total cost: $439. So far, so good. However, the tech told me that our two year-old water heater was almost certainly beyond repair due to the soaking of the electronic components. He gave me a verbal estimate for installing a new unit, which was WAY above what we had paid for the current unit. He also recommended a “friend” who specialized in drying-out flooded basements, peppering his glowing recommendation with stories of “deadly” black mold. He even offered to call and get us a free estimate. The mold guy came over, gave the basement a quick once-over, did some calculations on his phone, and gave us an estimate for $1,600(!). I ended-up spending less than $400 at the local big-box store for a second dehumidifier and another powerful fan. I had the water heater up-and-running in 48 hours and the basement completely dried out in 72. The point of the story is that The Plumbing Doctors will respond quickly, diagnose accurately (for a flat $350 fee), and provide treatment that doesn’t break the bank. If they recommend surgery, however, get a second opinion.

Expensive--doesn't seem to retain its master plumbers. Heavy sales pitch / upcharging.
