I was blown away by the price of the plants, helpfulness of the staff, and gardening supplies (mulch, pavers, sprays, etc.) at this nursery, compared to a highly rated Garden Center in my neighborhood in Fairfax, VA. Everything costs about 30% to 50% less at Patuxent and the quality is just as good. A few examples: a fully developed alclepeas tuberosa in a 1 gallon bucket was $11.99 compared to a 3 inch high seedling in a small 2"x2"x2" pot at the other garden center for $10.99. The 2 that I bought at Patuxent are thriving with tons of lots of blossoms. Of the 2 that I bought at the other center, one now has 2 small shoots and is about 4" high; the other one died. Also, I purchased a Little Lime Punch hydrangea in a 3 gallon bucket at Patuxent for about $49 with a profusion of small buds on it. Bought the same plant in a 3 gallon bucket from the other center for about $79 with 3 blossoms on it. They are both thriving. Same story with the hostas that I priced out at the 2 centers and ultimately purchased from Patuxent (they're all thriving). Patuxent seems to have just about the same variety of plants, just fewer of them since they're on a smaller lot. Conclusion: the 40 minute drive to and from Patuxent is well worth my time. I can get so much more for the money at Patuxent.
