Toyota of Walnut Creek added a 3% surcharge on top of the bill, which is illegal, per California Civil Code 1748.1. Which states " No retailer in any sales, or lease transaction with a consumer may impose a surcharge on a cardholder who elects to use a credit card in lieu of payment by cash, check, or similar means. This law has been in effect since July 2024 and they know it. The bill for the 30,000 mile service, including the illegal 3% surcharge came to over $500.00. The 30,000 mile service is over $80.00 cheaper at Dublin Toyota. My wife who brought the car in for service was forced to pay the 3% to get the car out of the dealership. She spoke to a number of service representatives who refereed her to the General Manager, Brad Barnett, who claimed to be well aware of the July 2024 law but refused to admit to any guilt for the overcharge, but is not willing to change their policy.

Repeatedly they gave us false information about significant issues--inflated by hundreds of dollars the amount of rebate we would get for opening lease; inflated, then backtracked when challenged, on extended warranty coverage; gave potentially critical false information about charging cord use on plug-in hybrid; gave false information about use of credit card to make lease payments; gave false information about grade of gas required; gave false information about automatic use of gas vs electric to keep gas in tank fresh. Otherwise generally pleasant staff and we got exactly the car we wanted (color and options) for an excellent price. Regarding warranty coverage-having noticed the amount of false information we had been given, we asked for and got a signed statement from them on length of coverage. Only when we started to make the payment were we told that that signed statement was false-coverage was actually years shorter than their signed statement said it was.
