Staff are clearly overwhelmed and under staffed. Given the high stress level of emergency services, upfront mandatory costs just to treat a pet can sometimes compound the stressfulness and seem transactional, ie, we will not assist in your pet's/s' care until we receive at least $500-$600.

Sorry, this happened before Covid but I want to finally give feedback. I went to emergency services. That went well. I was given an exorbitant estimate but was reassured it was only to get my cat's care started and it would not be that expensive. They did not keep promise to ask before adding on expensive interventions. Kept my cat in a humidified kennel for 5 hours (expensive per hour) before the veterinary specialist saw him. I was only able to speak to tech who gave incomplete information (had incomplete knowledge). She gave me answers like "Well, that is the way we do things". I never saw or spoke directly to the veterinarian! This was before Covid so that was not the reason for avoiding direct contact with a pet's owner. The final charge came to within $40 of the original exorbitant estimate (over $1,000) which included the 5 hours of "hospitalization in a special chamber" while he waited to be seen by a veterinarian. A charge I was informed of only after the fact. They repeated tests my regular veterinarian had already performed. At the end of the day they still had no idea why he was laboring to breathe. He died two weeks later.

I had an injured cat that needed to be seen on a Sunday on an emergency basis during the COVID lockdown. I was able to get an appointment right away and they were able to care for her. They were up front with how much it was going to cost.
