Among high-quality surgeons, price is certainly a consideration. Most insurance companies consider laser eye surgery a cosmetic treatment, which means you’ll pay out of pocket.

Costs vary substantially from surgeon to surgeon. Consumers’ Checkbook’s undercover shoppers asked the staff of all the LASIK surgeons in the Bay Area we could find for their prices of a single-vision correction for both eyes. The figure below reports the prices we were quoted. As you can see, they ranged from $4,000 to $7,500 or more.

It’s easy to shop for price. Call several doctors’ offices and ask how many surgeries they have done in the past two years, the price—per eye or for two eyes—and what that includes.
