Dr. McDonald is excellent at providing medical services. He cannot be reached by phone or e-mail. However, he works for INOVA Healthcare. He was bought our several years ago. INOVA Healthcare is a disaster for patients due to its extremely poor IT infrastructure and management. Example: you go in and see your primary care doctor. The doctor writes a prescription for a new medication. Due to an allergy, you cannot use the typical med in this case. So, the doctor picks a less common one that comes with 3 pages of warnings and side effects. You get the meds and take them. For one side effect (headaches) there is a warning that you should call the doctor "right away" if it happens. It happens but it may be due to stopping caffeine also required for this med. Call the doctor and there is no answer. Call the office desk and there is no answer. Go online to ask for help, they say to call the office. Call the INOVA scheduling desk to ask for an appointment with anyone who can answer the question. They try to call the doctor (same result), they try to call the office (same result). They call the triage nurse who says to call the doctor. This took more than two hours to get to this point in the process. I gave up and took Tylenol (I had been told to avoid Tylenol in the past or other reasons). I told my wife to take me to the ER if I acted odd or had vision problems (the warning said that may come after the headache). The headache went away. Tylenol seemed to work. INOVA has bought out all the competing medical services in this area. I need a new medical system not a new doctor. Note I did not consider the local urgent medical care service (owned by INOVA) because they do not have access to my INOVA medical records from the INOVA doctor or the INOVA hospital. A previous trip to their urgent care resulted in being sent to the INOVA ER and spending half a day there after the doctors there did a quick look at my medical records and decided that there was no need for me to go to the ER but once there and they were very busy, it would be many hours before I could be discharged. The ER docs said had the urgent care looked at my heart graphs in the record they would have known it was normal for me. The ER doc did not understand why urgent care does not see the INOVA records. I am told it costs too much to give urgent care that access. INOVA has great doctors but the worst possible management. Appointments take months to happen and are not coordinated between different parts of their system, even when the same front desk staff does both parts.

Dr. McDonald is an excellent diagnostician, which is what you need in a family doctor. Since he associated with the Inova Medical Group, however, he is not supported by a front office that is as responsive as when he was in private practice. We adapted by being sure we get everything we need before we leave, taking note of what Dr. McDonald tells us we will be getting from the staff and asking for it.

Have used Dr. McDonald for several years. He is knowledgable and caring about his patients. His willingness to listen and research problems can extend an appointment beyond the time other doctors would have left the room, which is greatly appreciated.
