Grossly underestimated costs (the project ultimately cost 3x more than she'd projected, and was difficult to work with. Often proceeded without consulting us so some "design decisions" left us with arrangements that did not satisfy our needs and also led to substantial additional charges.

Scratch a lie, catch a thief. Barbara Hawthorn Interiors took a retainer up front, and proceeded to charge as much as possible as quickly as possible for not very much. As an example, one invoice indicated that several hours were spent obtaining quotes from vendors, to the tune of several hundred dollars in design fees, and the labor and materials quote was given in the thousands of dollars. I sent quote requests to my own vendors with the provided specifications, spent ten minutes on the phone, and got a quote for labor and materials for less than the design fees, never mind the much higher amounts BHI quoted for labor and materials. They also ignored design requests and budgeted amounts. When I requested the work be done correctly, they charged for the original work, and for the corrections. And on, and on. In the end, I did most of the work myself, just to avoid getting ripped off on the back end, and paid BHI a fortune. Oh, and they didn't mention the retainer was spent for a couple of billing cycles. As soon as the retainer and extra fees were done, I paid the overages just to get away from BHI, and found another designer to finish the project.
