On May 28, 2024, we hired Boss Design Center for a full kitchen renovation, as we liked their YouTube marketing videos. Their process involves two phases: a $5K design fee followed by a six-figure construction contract cost (excluding appliances, hardware, and accessories, which we supply). Very disappointed with this design build firm. Some of the concerns we had are as follows: (1) We were given a three-month window to finalize the design, but we often faced pressure to rush through it sooner. For example, while we were wrapping up the design, on August 6th, we were surprised to receive an email from Boss Design Center regarding a supposed 'upcoming' 9% price increase for cabinets. The email warned that this price increase would apply if we did not finalize the construction contract by August 12th. When we reached out to inquire about this, our concerns were not adequately addressed. We subsequently contacted the cabinet company directly, as well as two other local cabinet dealers. All three sources confirmed that no price increase from the cabinet manufacturer was planned. (2) Another concern we had was when we asked for references (before the signing the construction contract), Boss Design Center directed us to the testimonials on their website, rather than providing the actual references we requested. (3) Throughout the design process, Boss Design Center consistently assured us that we were staying within budget. However, critical elements that were verbally discussed during the initial consultations, such as removing outdated knee walls and painting existing doors, were only later presented as additional costs. (4) Unfortunately, the construction contract terms seemed a bit one-sided, please read the Boss Design Center contract very carefully!!! For instance, (a) one of the contract clauses allowed Boss Design Center to terminate our contract if the permits were not received within 180 days, however, there was no mention of any refund of the 50% deposit payment to start the construction. Next, (b) there is a clause in the contract that requires your final payment (100%) at the “substantial” completion of the kitchen, which is very subjective and totally up to the discretion of Boss Design Center. After going thought the design phase, we lost the confidence and trust we once had with Boss Design Center. Ultimately, due to the concerns outlined above, we decided not to proceed with Boss Design Center for the construction phase, and lost our design fee.
