We had cracks in our chimney that caused smoke smells in our house and eventually water leaking onto our hearth, problems that were increasing over time after the rainy summer of 2019. We had 4 estimates done, the diagnoses and prices of which were all over the map. Interestingly, all of the estimators were interested in the cause of the cracking, e.g., lightning strikes, the 2011 earthquake. The suggested repairs went from chipping out bad bricks and replacing them with half-bricks to replacement of the entire chimney. Chimchimchurree suggested removing the bricks and mortar along the crack lines and replacing them. This seemed the most reasonable to us, and their price was also reasonable. The men who did the work were pleasant and we think they did a good job. For one thing, the smells and water drops have stopped! Two notes: the people who do the work should wear earplugs: it is really loud work. Also: it is very dusty work, and the dust blew downwind onto my neighbor’s deck. They spoke to her and smoothed it over, offering to clean it to her satisfaction, but it would be better if there were some way to keep that from happening in the first place. One of the men told me that the company was about 5 years old and was hoping to buy the technology for that soon. Overall, it was a good job for a fair price. I hope I don’t have to hire anybody to do this for us again, but I would recommend them to others who need work done.
