I cannot.
My family was under pressure from Fairfax Hospital's Palliative Care team to move my Dad ASAP. They suggested Manor Care based on proximity to our homes, bed availability and the facility's willingness to accept him based on medical necessities. I didn't tour Manor Care in advance and that was a colossal mistake. I foolishly believed Fairfax's Palliative team when they assured me this was an esteemed facility and that they had my Dad's best interest at heart. I was duped.
I arrived an hour after the ambulance transport to find my dying Father in a heartbreaking state. His 6'4" frame was folded into a twin bed that had a large wood footboard that kept him from outstretching his cramped legs. It was nothing like a hospital bed; it had a thin, flimsy, plastic mattress and no side rails. My Dad was a fall risk and his previous beds had both an alarm to alert staff if he attempted to leave bed and side rails to keep him from falling off. My Dad couldn't keep his body upright and he precariously rested off the side of the Manor Care bed.
He was also soaking wet because the staff didn't assess his capabilities and they left him a Styrofoam cup of ice water. He didn't have the dexterity to hold the cup; his clothes and bedding were saturated...and he was still thirsty. (
The bleak room had trash on the floor, a tiny, dirty bathroom with mineral stained faucets. The only light source in my Dad's room was a garish, fluorescent, ceiling light and it was directly above his head, beaming harshly in his eyes. The wall paper opposite the bed was peeling off the wall. The paint near his head was chipping off the wall.
When the food was served my gag-reflex engaged. I wanted to believe it couldn't taste as bad as it looked. I was wrong. It was not palatable; death row inmates are served better meals.
Every piece of furniture, appliance, and amenity were old, did not function properly and hosted years of filth. I had to use items from my purse to pry the foul grime and scum off the remote control; I saturated a paper towel with hand sanitizer and used my Swiss Army Knife to dig the grime out from between the remote buttons.
It took the admissions/nurses 12 hours to get the doctors order and then fill my Dad's prescriptions. THIS MAN WAS DYING FROM CANCER, HIS BODY WAS RAVAGED BY TUMORS, HE HAD NECROTIC BED SORES AND WENT WITHOUT PAIN MANAGEMENT FOR 12 DAMN HOURS!
His agony ended days after arriving at Manor Care but my agony of regret is relentless. I will never forgive myself, but hope by sharing this personal story others will avoid this kind of regret and send their loved ones elsewhere.
