I believe this business was bought from Carl Runk by one of his former students. Jason Savage is now the proprietor. Our eight-year-old son started learning Tae Kwondo at World Karate last fall and absolutely loves it. After his first class, he told me it makes him "feel great". Jason has fostered an atmosphere of respect and support amongst his instructors and students. He has an unnatural ability to learn kids' names, so right from the start, he welcomes them personally and uses their names. There are certain rules for the school (bow to the flags before getting on the mat, append "sir" or "ma'am" when answering questions), that the instructors firmly but gently enforce. Whenever there is a new students in a class (completely new or moved up as a result of earning a belt), the kids line up to shake hands and introduce themselves. Jason has an incredible knack for working with kids. He inspires them, encourages them, pushes them to do their best and be proud of their work and accomplishments. I've been a classroom teacher before and I know how hard it is to kindly acknowledge a request to use the bathroom or get a tissue while keeping the rest of the class focused. I've seen them encourage a kid shaking with nervousness during a belt test (I thought he was going to burst into tears and quit), refocus him and, without lowering standards, get him through his test so he could be proud of his accomplishment. I have no knowledge of martial arts myself, but I know my son has learned a lot, and I'm glad he has a physical activity he's so pleased with. World Karate also has an after-school program and summer camps, and my son has tried out and loved both. Both consist of Tae Kwondo lessons geared toward the students' experience level and the next belt they're working on, plus snacktime and homework time (for the after school program) and activities like bowling, movies, rec center pools for the camps. I really cannot speak more highly of Jason Savage and the school he heads.
