I paid Merrifield a very steep price because I thought they were the best in the area and I was wrong about that. Merrifield installed a small brick patio and it was a complete mess. The crew did not even fill in between the bricks; the guy told me to get a bag of sand and put it down myself. The patio was such a mess that I had Merrifield tear it up, get a better brick, and fill it in, which they did. I do not think it was worth the money, or the aggravation.

PROJECT: INSTALL DRYSTACK FIELDSTONE BORDER AROUND FRONT FLOWERBED IN STERLING, VA. I'd used this same store to install the same product at my prior home in Reston. That time, the landscape designer included plants as well as the stone border. It was not a very good experience. I am separating that project from this Sterling project. The Sterling project was no plants, only install a stone border. The CONTRACT SPECIFIED 3-6 inch thick pieces of fieldstone, which I wanted because I knew from past experience those stone would not move once installed. I also insisted, although the ground sloped, that the border be level. The crew arrived in Sterling on time, but the truck was NOT loaded with the material specified in the contract! The designer claimed they'd "run out of" the 3-6 inch thick stones, so SHE TOOK THE LIBERTY OF AUTHORIZING THE TRUCK BE LOADED WITH 2-4 inch thick stones WITHOUT ASKING MY PERMISSION IN ADVANCE. THIS WAS A BREACH OF CONTRACT! But, after waiting many weeks for the installation date to come, I VERY RELUCTANTLY gave the OK to use 2-4 inch thick stones. The crew finished the 25 foot long project in one day. Besides bringing the wrong material, at the end of the day, the stones were NOT INSTALLED LEVEL as I had specified, but followed the slope of the ground. It made me nauseous to look at it! I complained to the landscape developer that this was NOT what I had specified, they were cutting corners. She arranged for a different crew to come the next day. They added significantly more stone. Now the border, although not level, is much improved from how it was the day before. Another annoying problem I've discovered: When I step on the rocks (to access the flowerbed to water, mulch, weed, etc) the 2-4 inch thick stones move! I'm constantly adjusting them, stuffing small rocks underneath to stabilize. The last straw: My lawn-mowing service throws out rocks from this stone border when they run their weed whacker along it. I know this because I find rocks in the yard near the border after they've mowed. I'm quite upset about the designer (1) not contacting me to get my consent (or not) before loading the truck with 2-4" thick stones; and (2) not laying the border level as I'd specified. Between my Reston experience (which was a disaster for different reasons) and this, I will not be using Merrifield Garden Center for landscape design services again.
