This was a service call for dryer vent cleaning. The firm was not straighforward about pricing. I was given a quotation of $99 over the phone, and I specifically asked whether the ductwork leading to the outside was included, and was told yes. However, when the technician arrived he said that the fee only covered the machine and the first five feet of ductwork. I agreed to the SUBSTANTIAL additional fee because I really wanted the work done now and because it is concededly a long duct due to the house's construction. The technician noted that there was an unpleasant smell in the dryer and suggested that it was due to mold, a claim of which I was dubious. Because of the smell, however, which was sort of "fishy," I had called an electrician to examine the electrical work, as electrical burning sometimes causes a fishy smell. The electrician arrived later the same day. He found the electrical work was in good shape, but because the smell was so strong near the dryer vent, he disconnected the duct from the dryer and found two dead and dessicated (and lint-covered) animals, a squirrel and a chipmunk in the dryer vent itself! So I'm left uncertain as to whether the cleaned any part of the ductwork at all.
