My dentist referred me to Dr. Cohen at West Seattle Endodontics to determine if a crack in my tooth was too deep and would make it unlikely a root canal could allow the tooth to be saved and allow a crown to be successfully installed. I had been told by a dental surgeon that an endodontist could drill into the tooth to see if it could be saved prior to undergoing a full root canal. If the tooth couldn't be saved, there would be no sense doing a root canal at a cost of $2,241 from Dr. Cohen. On June 17 I was told by Dr. Cohen's office that, if I had Delta Dental coverage my cost for an evaluation with x-rays would be $65. When I arrived for my appointment with Dr. Cohen, I was told by office staff that I would need to pay an additional $99 for an "upgraded" X-ray. And that the cost of this exam would be on top of the cost of the root canal (if it was warranted). I paid the additional fee but reiterated that the reason for the appointment was to find out if the tooth was sound enough to have a crown put on it. Dr. Cohen took x-rays, did a "cone beam" x-ray and she looked at the exterior of the tooth. She then told me there was a 50-50 chance the tooth would fail if a crown was put on it. If Dr. Cohen knew the examination was unlikely to provide a more definitive answer than 50-50 I would have preferred she had told me that and not gone ahead with the $164 exam.
