We also compared prices at warehouse clubs. If you’re willing to buy in bulk, you’ll usually save using these low-cost alternatives to grocery stores—but only if you go often enough to justify their membership fees. And you won’t save anything if you throw out half of what you buy.
How do Trader Joe’s, ALDI’s, and Lidl’s Prices Compare?
ALDI and Lidl focus on low costs, and our survey found their prices to be astonishingly inexpensive—cheaper even than Walmart and comparable to warehouse clubs. Trader Joe’s also offers lower prices than many traditional supermarket chains, while earning mostly high accolades from its customers.

Prefer to buy organic? You’ll pay a lot more for it—on average, we found organic produce, meat, and dairy products cost 63 percent more than their nonorganic counterparts. But at some stores, this organic-price penalty is higher than at others.
