I recently hired Sunny Painting and Construction to paint my kitchen cabinets, walls and ceiling. I did that based on ratings in Checkbook for painters and because of their low cost compared to other proposals I had obtained. I was quite impressed by the speed, thoroughness and quality of the work. So, I asked for construction references since there was no rating in Checkbook. Hong, the owner, gave me a long list of references. I only called one because the reference given was truly glowing. I asked Hong to replace basement paneling (that had already been removed) with drywall, install insulation, use 2X4s instead of the original furring strips, remove a dropped ceiling (due to mold) and replace with drywall and install 9 surface mount LEDs with a dimmer, and paint new surfaces. It seemed a huge job to me, but Hong and his crew completed work in 2.5 days. We had a lot of "stuff" in that part of the basement and a proposal from another company listed the cost of relocating things to the unfinished part of the basement as $832. Hong did not charge anything for that and the crew helped us put the large items back afterward. The only caveat is that Hong made no suggestions. For example, I was going to simply put in new paneling and dropped ceiling, and he didn't mention that he would do drywall instead for not much more money. What started out as a repair operation turned into a basement remodel for about 1/2 the cost of the other "repair" estimates.
