I hardly ever post a customer review of businesses I patronize; but then again, I‘ve never before been the victim of a blatant attempt to defraud me, as recently occurred during a visit to myeyedrdin downtown Silver Spring. I offer this summary of events as a cautionary tale about doing business with this company. I’d been a customer of myeyedr in Silver Spring for several years when I made an appointment this past December to see the optometrist for an annual checkup. The eye exam went fine, and the optometrist wrote me a new prescription for my eyeglasses, since my sight in one eye had changed a bit. I told her that I’d like a written copy of the prescription because I wanted to get new lenses only for my current frames and had thought that I’d check prices at Costco before placing an order with myeyedr. She responded that she wasn’t sure if Costco accepted my insurance but, otherwise, made no attempt to steer me away from checking with them. As is customary, the optometrist then walked me over to a sales representative in the store. I began the conversation with him by stating clearly that I only wanted to get replacement lenses and that I only needed a price quote, since I intended to also check prices at Costco. He said fine but asked if I’d be ok with placing a contingent “order” with him, i.e., that I wouldn’t pay for the order unless and until I let the store know that I wanted to go ahead with the purchase. He further explained that he needed to put my credit card in the system, so he could generate the paperwork. Though I was a bit hesitant, I agreed to his request, after he again confirmed that my card would not be charged before I let myeyedr know that I wanted to go ahead with the order. After several minutes at his computer, the sales rep presented me two “invoices,” one for my regular lenses and one for my sunglass lenses. The total amount came to $917. When I reviewed the invoices, I said that it looked like my credit card had been charged on both. He repeatedly tried to assure me that I was mistaken and that no charge had been made. After a rather long back and forth over my concerns that that’s not what the paperwork showed, I rather exasperatingly told him that I wanted to cancel the whole transaction and simply get a receipt that showed my payment of the optometrist’s charges. Reluctantly, he agreed to do that and eventually handed me an invoice for $49 for those charges only. In leaving the store, I felt uncomfortable with what had just transpired, because I didn’t think the sales rep had been straight with me. When I got home, I still felt uneasy; so, I decided to check my credit card transactions for the day. Lo and behold, there were three transactions with myeyedr – a charge for $917, the amounts indicated on the “invoices” I had received for the lenses and optometry visit; a second, refunding that amount and a third, again charging the original amount. However, there was no $49 charge that tracked the final invoice I had received from the sales rep for the optometry appointment only. It was late in the afternoon, so I waited until the next day to return to the store. When I arrived, I saw the sales rep who I had worked with the day before; but rather than engage him, I asked to speak with the store manager. When I described to the manager what had happened the day before, he offered a perfunctory apology and refunded me the amount I had been erroneously charged. I also showed him the final $49 invoice the sales rep had given me for the optometry visit. He directed me to the date of the invoice, which was from the optometry exam I had had the year before. When he again apologized for the “mistake,” I told him that what had happened could not have been a mistake, but rather an intentional effort to defraud me. I left it at that and exited the store. I don’t know if the store manager or anyone else at myeyedr has investigated the incident further; but I do know that I will never again buy anything from myeyedr. p.s., I recently purchased 2 full new pair of glasses (frames and lenses) at Costco for a total cost of $285!

Two serious issues result in a "Not Recommended." Quality of staff advice and service was highly variable. One time -- good, detailed, technical help. Next time -- clueless. Pricing was opaque and included multiple aspects of up-selling. Significant aspects of a "bait and switch" process.

They have always been helpful for repairs and adjustments. They can be expensive for eye wear purchases, but they will negotiate their prices.
