PROJECT: PURCHASE, PAINT, AND INSTALL SPECIAL ORDER HOUSE TRIM/MOULDING, INSTALL SHUTTERS, INSTALL EXTERIOR LIGHTING AND AN ELECTRIC OUTLET ON THE FRONT OF A BRICK HOUSE FRONT THAT PREVIOUSLY WAS VINYL SIDING. I'd been searching for two years to finish the front exterior of my house after vinyl siding was replaced with brick. This is because the brick contractor (American Exteriors & Masonry of Leesburg, VA) did not include in my contract re-installing trim/moulding or shutters after the brick veneer was installed. I had assumed this was part of the job! After all, they removed all these items, why wouldn’t they put them back on? Instead, they trashed everything, including ten perfectly good shutters that I was planning to re-use. The house looked horrible. I'm sure the neighbors wondered what was going on. Did I run out of money? No, I hadn't. Finally, the estimator of a window company who also installed trim, yet who declined to take on my job, suggested I hire a handyman company. Bingo! I'd used JWHI once before for a small project and they'd done a good job, but nothing was on the scale of this project, which included searching for specialized dentil trim that matched existing dentil trim on the front of my 20+ year old house. JWHI located the trim manufacturer, special ordered and installed the trim, painted all front facing trim and other wood (on warm days - this was in winter), installed ten new shutters that I'd bought and painted myself, installed new lighting (two sconces and post light) which was tricky because a junction box had to be cut out of the brick for each sconce, and the new cast aluminum lights were much heavier than the old fake brass. They also replaced a weatherproof exterior outlet which also required cutting into the brick. In general, they left the house looking amazing! The only negative is their estimator's written quotes. I’ve received three now from JWHI. The estimate includes what I can only describe as fractional grammar, making parts difficult to comprehend. The estimate may include an item that isn’t on the property at all, or includes items that don’t need repair. Quite inexplicable given a perfectly clear walk-around discussion that day or the day before. Also, JWHI estimates don’t break out tasks by line item, but lumps everything together into a rather wide range.

I rarely leave reviews, especially negative reviews, but the estimate for my small tasks was so outrageous, I felt like JW was trying to take advantage of me and that I should warn others. Their estimate (which was not free) was about five times what I ended up paying someone else. I did not hire JW, so I can't comment on their work, but the handyman I did hire completed the job in one hour. Look, JW, if you are not willing to do small handyman tasks, even though you list yourself under "handyman services," tell us when we first contact you.

The technicians were wonderful as getting the work done well and on time. I did have to manage the scheduling and had a small billing mix-up. One just has to stay on top of the non-work aspects of the job.
