I would strongly endorse Robert Pence Remodeling for anyone who needs a new roof. Rob Brown, who now runs the company, was a true professional and a delightful person -- prompt, responsive, personable, and straightforward. He provided a clear written estimate for the project, got to work quickly with his team when I accepted it, and replaced the roof in one day, cleaning up thoroughly behind him. Because his team finished as the sun was setting, he returned the next day to ensure that the driveway and other areas were completely clean of any nails or other debris. The roof looks beautiful, and I have only good things to say about the experience.

$600 for 1&1/2 hours work with my shingles and a few small supplies for the small roof over an extension from the kitchen is too high. Robert Brown has purchased the business from Mr. Pence. The shingles were extras I bought when Mr. Pence roofed the entire structure 10 years ago. Brown is an amiable person. However, the worker, Adam, was a half hour late so that Brown left before his arrival. Adam started on top of his truck without coming to my door, and he ignored my comment about being late when I came outside. More importantly, Adam had just basic English, and he could not answer my questions. (I was, and still am, concerned about a missing piece in the so-called ice & snow shield sheet when he placed it onto my roof.) I think the owner should have stayed for this job in order to answer questions for the customer even though he has complete trust in the immigrant employee. As for price, I recently had new Latino contractors work for several hours for $900 with 3 family workers and a Hispanic owner with good English. Mr. Brown works out of his residential apartment so there is no overhead for an office lease. Brown did come back to check the finished job and ensure good clean up, but I had called him in his absence because I was not feeling confidant about Adam myself. What you can see of the job, looks good. I am a retired homeowner who pays attention to any work on my property, but if you can't be home, you would not get frustrated trying to get answers during this job. Rockville/Olney

The proposal/quote from Robert Pence Remodeling was in most all respects (e.g. roofing material brand) similar to the offering of another contractor flagged for high by Consumers' Checkbook. The choice came down to price, with Pence being the lower price.
