I hired Johnson Chimney Service to add a steel liner to the chimney flue in my home. The estimate for adding the liner and tuckpointing was $3795. But the company charged me $4545 after the work was done, alleging that it found debris in the chimney, without showing me any photos or other proof. Also, the company's website says it is licensed to work in Alexandria, VA, but when a neighbor searched for the company on DPOR, the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, she found the company had lets its license to work in Alexandria lapse in 2017. Finally, the company did not obtain a permit from the city nor tell me that I had to obtain a permit on my own. I discovered that only later, and was lucky that the city allowed me to obtain a retroactive work permit and that the work passed inspection. Steer clear of this company.
