Mr. Stonis visited our house for a $100 energy assessment and paid estimate for insulation improvement. As part of the estimate, he went inside the east side attic, saw some old wiring, and I explained to him that it was inactive. Anthony apparently didn't notice that there was another side attic that might have been a candidate for insulation.

Mr. Stonis later returned at my request to inspect the other side attic and add it to the estimate. Not only did I point out the old and dangerous wiring on the interior wall portion, but also I showed him how it went upwards and asked him if he could blow insulation through that ceiling opening. He told me it wasn't large enough. On the job day, the workers waited until all of the other work was completed to begin work on this section. They told me that Anthony didn't notice that there was an entire 15' section of this side attic and correctly pointed out that this would be unsafe and against code to insulate. They also told me that the visible wiring running to the attic above this room posed a similar hazard.

The workers' observations were all made via direct access points to the side attic, and there was no reason Mr. Stonis could not have reached the same conclusions himself during the estimate, if not for his negligence or error.

Mr. Stonis told me over the phone that he would only credit me 17% of the cost for the attic insulation, though by my account about 40% of the area in the price quote was not going to be completed.

When I presented my Angie's List coupon for 10% off, they complained that I should have presented it at the time of the estimate--though the coupon mentions no such stipulation. The only reason I can think of that someone would require this before an estimate is so that the merchant can fraudulently inflate the price to negate the value of the coupon.

I asked Anthony to come to the house to measure the area they didn't insulate so we could arrive at a fair credit, he refused.

Last, beware that Anthony apparently sends out a contract with his proposals that contains a binding arbitration clause. This is basically a way to sign away your legal rights to sue if there is a problem such as this. I didn't sign it, and you shouldn't either. The fact that he even tries to get people to sign this makes me think that he's not willing to stand behind his work. I should have taken this red flag more seriously, and you should too.
