I had my roof replaced by Furr Roofing in November 2023. I waited a year to provide a better assessment. Furr Roofing was competitive with two other bidders. After speaking with Mark Furr, the owner, I felt confident in their approach. I also requested the installation of two roof vents and new, wider gutters. ROOF VENT ISSUE: The workers drilled two 4” holes in the roof, and the roof vents were installed. They weren’t installed with roof vent collars, making it difficult to connect the flexible ducting from the bathroom vents. One vent was misaligned by 1.5 – 2 inches while the other was slightly misaligned. When I raised these issues, the team leader seemed unaware of what duct collars were. Duct collars are available from the roof vent manufacturer as part of a kit or individually purchased for $13. The team leader did manage to readjust the one misaligned vent, though not perfectly. I figured I could order the collars and install them later myself but that proved to be challenging due to the misalignment of the roof vents to the holes. If the collars were attached when the roof vents were installed, they would have perfectly aligned the roof vents with the holes. I raised my concerns with Mark who made excuses about not knowing what roof vent collars were, which left me questioning his “master roofer” status. GUTTER INSTALLATION: A few days later, the gutter team installed the gutters along with SHUR FLO gutter protectors. The installation crew left several of the old gutter hangers in my yard, which I luckily found before mowing. A month later, I noticed considerable zebra/tiger striping on the gutters, possibly due to the galvanic corrosion caused between the steel screws used to attach the aluminum gutter protectors to the aluminum gutters. I contacted both the roofer and the manufacturer of the SHUR FLO protectors, and both immediately blamed organic material, such as leaves, decaying on top of the gutter protectors. The gutters were installed late in the fall and most of the leaves were already off the trees. I also noticed no leaf buildup of any kind on my gutters or roof. The roofer then blamed “dirty air”, which was unconvincing. Mark said he would have the gutter installer come out and inspect but I never heard from him. I may try replacing the steel screws with aluminum screws, if they are available, to see if that helps with the striping issue. LESSONS LEARNED: When hiring a roofer, ensure they install roof vent collars to easily connect flexible ducting and align vents properly with the holes in the roof. Get it in writing they will do so. This experience greatly reduced my overall satisfaction with Furr Roofing and questions his “master roofer” status. Although it may seem trivial, I found the lack of customer support after Furr Roofing was paid to be quite underwhelming.
