I had a simultaneous failure of two things; the ignition switch and the gas gauge. They replaced the ignition switch (which is a very involved job) but thought my gas gauge had always been reading empty. I had to explain that until the ignition switch failed, my gas gauge had worked as I expected, and that it must have been damaged when my car was towed in for repair. I had to bring the car back to have the gas gauge repaired. But then, my dashboard speedometer lights were out, making seeing the gauges impossible at night, so I had to come back a third time to have the dash lights repaired (which apparently was a poorly seated connector) they were able to fix in a few minutes at no charge.
